George White Elementary School emphasizes the importance of learning to read and then reading to learn! The entire staff has been trained to use our reading series by Open Court which focuses on a balanced program of reading, writing, speaking, and listening with a strong foundation in phonics. Each grade level has a list of Core literature books to enrich their program. Students have the opportunity to practice reading and writing on a daily basis.
The district writing rubrics are being implemented across all grade levels. We are focusing on these writing traits: ideas, organization, sentence fluency, word choice, voice, and conventions.
Throughout the year the students are encouraged to read at home to earn their medal for our school wide Reading Olympics program sponsored by the PTA. Minutes are recorded on a monthly Reading Olympics form. Go for the Gold!
To celebrate literacy our school participates in Read Across America in recognition of Dr. Seuss' birthday. Students can enter a school wide poetry contest. Author's Day presents an opportunity for students to meet published authors during grade level assemblies. In addition the students my purchase autographed books by these featured authors. Finally, one of our favorite events includes our annual Read-A-Thon.
Remember, it is important to read aloud to your child(ren) on a regular basis.
Readers Become Leaders!
